Abstract

Usually, the party that holds the presidency suffers a significant attrition and the loss of the «midterm» elections, but everything seems to indicate that the Democrats can keep the Senate, which is essential for the legislative developments envisaged by the presidency. The weight of Trumpism in the party and in an important part of the candidates for Republican representatives and senators, directly links these elections to the political and electoral future of Donald Trump. At this moment, the elephant party does not have a moderate option to the radical and populist vision of the former Republican president. A shift in public opinion, accelerated by the effects of the pandemic on the dynamics of poverty and inequality, may be underway that will help the reform proposals of the presidency and the transformative regional and federal agenda of some of the Democratic candidates.
