Abstract

This paper presents some of the most relevant aspects of the Brazilian elections of October 2022, elections that were contested by extreme right-wing political groups that, until recently, demanded not only the annulment of the results, but also a military intervention in the country. In addition, the elections marked the return of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and of Lula da Silva to the presidency, one of the main leaders of the Latin American left. On the other hand, they represented a strengthening of conservative sectors in the national Congress, as well as in the regional governorships. In the following, we highlight the main points that explain the electoral results for the presidency of the republic and conclude by pointing out some problematic issues for the future of democracy in the country.
